In later versions, la llorona is said to take children who disobey their parents, or wander off alone. She is seen to come out at night or late evenings from the river or oceans of Mexico.
An encounter with La Llorona happened in the summer of 1948 when a family went fishing, swimming, and in the evening had a camp out. As the 4 children went out to the forest to play hide-n-seek the adults specifically told them not to go by the river, later the parents notice how quiet it was the giggles and laughter from the little ones was gone. Fearing the worst the two mothers ran screaming for their kids. One older son came from the bushes out of breath saying a woman was talking to the other children down by the river, the both mothers whispered "La Llorona" and ran the river seeing the rest of them talking to a woman in a long white dress who seemed to be glowing. The woman would ask the children "have you seen my children?" "where are my children?" The mothers screamed for them to run away, being so afraid the family abandoned their campsite and left home.
I feel sorry for those family an hope they are recovering from the close encounter with the Llorona.
